{e Spud's Farming Column No.1
{f **************************
{e (Please read this with a Yorkshire accent !!)
{a Hellllllloooo everyone out there. Welcome to the {eSpud's {afarming
section where you can learn all'bout {cgardening. {aThis time I am going to show
you how to grow the common garden {fAmiga 500 {aand the {ehybrid {fAmiga 500 Plus{a.
{a As you might already know they are very hardy plants which can
withstand {cacid {aand {cstrong alkaline {asoils. They do however grow best on a
light acid soil that is high in sand.
If you don't have an {fAmiga plant {ato take cuttings from then you will
have to {fbuy {aor {fsteal {aone from somewhere. If your {eneighbour {ahas some growing
in his garden then perhaps he would give you a few {efunction keys {ato grow
yourself.
There are a few things you look out for when taking cuttings from a plant.
They are :-
{f- {aThe plant should be strong and healthy (at least {e4 megs of ram {aand an
{e external disk drive{a)
{f- {aThe shoots should be removed where there is crowding (the {emiddle row {aof {ekeys
{a is ideal)
{f- {aThe plant should be free from fungus and {cparasites {a(no action replays or
hard-disks)
{f- {aAny flowers should be {fsymetrical {aand full of colour (the {fpowerlight{a should
be bright)
{a Once you have collected your cuttings you should keep them on damp
paper to stop them drying out while you do the next stage. Find a small
{eflowerpot {aand half fill with a high-peat soil. Place the {fAmiga cuttings {aontop
of this soil and then cover them by 2 inches of the same soil. Once this has
been done they can be lightly watered and placed in a damp, warm room.
{a After {eseveral days {ayou should be able to see a few cables sprouting
from the soil. If you see nothing then the chances are that you have got
cuttings from an {fAmiga Plus{a. Due to their hybrid nature they can only be
reproduced by sowing their seeds which are square in shape. They can be found
along the stem of the plant and pressing any {fprotruding bumps {acould cause one
to shoot out and be visible. The seeds should have their outer plastic
coating removed and the circular inners planted in the same way as before.
{a Once fully grown the {eAmiga {aplant can be left where there is sufficient
light and water. A typical plant should last for {c10 - 15 {ayears and may grow
{fup to {c50cm {ain length. A fully grown plant can be identified by the long
trailing shoots pertruding from the plants stem. {fOften they grow upto 5m
long. {eDo not cut these off as they are needed by the plant to live.
{f See you all in my next helpful gardening column.
